Welcome

My name is David Burrows and I am a freelance translator of Spanish into English. This blog contains some of my favourite words, a (mostly) amusing explanation of said words as well as some of my musings about translation. I hope you enjoy it.

Esoteric

Adjective - intended for or understood by only a small number of people with a specialised knowledge.
From the Greek esoterikos, from eso - within.
"Why, yes, I am esoteric. Thank-you for asking."

My feelings on this word are actually quite divided: on the one hand, I can never remember what it means, no matter how many times I look it up and that really irritates me. However, when I do look it up for the umpteenth (good word) time, I am always amused by the, somewhat ironic given the circumstances, meaning. Surely they should have thought of a less esoteric word for esoteric. But then, I guess it wouldn't be so esoteric if everyone could remember the meaning...
